The International Traditional Choice Indemnity Plan options are for those living overseas. These plans give you the freedom to get care from any licensed provider you choose.

Key points
  • Overseas provider access: We have established arrangements with about 165,000 health care providers outside the United States (in addition to 1.2 million inside the United States) to be part of our network. We refer to these arrangements as direct settlement.
  • Choose any provider: he plan pays the same level of benefits as in the U.S., and you can choose any providers, as the Aetna International plan does not have a network requirement.
  • Additional benefits and member services: This plan provides access to additional benefits to help you receive quality care, wherever you live.
  • Members pay first, then submit claims: You pay for the cost of care up front. Then you complete and submit a claim form to Aetna to be reimbursed for covered expenses. You can do this on the Aetna International Mobile app or the Aetna International member portal.
  • Deductible and coinsurance: Once you meet the annual deductible, the plan typically pays a percentage of the expense (usually 80%) based on recognized charges. You pay the balance (usually 20%). This is called coinsurance.
  • Pharmacy benefits: Prescription drug coverage is part of medical plan coverage for those living overseas. Consult your plan documents for information on copays and other charges when filling prescriptions in the U.S. or through mail order.
  • Vision and hearing benefits: This plan includes glasses, hearing aids, eye care and more. Find documents in "Find resources & forms" below.
  • Preventive care: Preventive care services are covered at 100%.
  • Available as an HDHP: This plan is available as a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) or as a non-HDHP health plan.

Note: You can also learn about dental coverage in the Summary of Benefits documents in "Find resources & forms" below.

HDHP with Aetna International Traditional Choice Indemnity Plan

As the name says, an HDHP has a higher deductible — but you’ll pay a lower premium. That means you’ll have less deducted from your paycheck each pay period. The HDHP plan with the International Traditional Choice plan offers access to the same providers, services and program features as the non-HDHP version of the plan.

Aetna International Traditional Choice Indemnity Plan

The International Traditional Choice Plan makes it easy to get the quality health care services you and your family need.

With a non-HDHP plan like this one, you’ll:
  • Pay more in premiums each pay period than you would with the HDHP
  • Have a lower deductible, so plan coverage will start sooner
  • Have copays for pharmacy services only
