Learn about benefits that can help with good oral health.

Your oral health is a window into your overall well-being. Visiting your dentist for preventive care can help spot other health concerns early, when they may be easier to treat.

The following dental plans are available based on whether you live in the U.S. or overseas, as well as your status (active employee or retiree).

  • U.S. employees (part-time or full-time) are eligible to select one of these dental plans. Flex employees are not eligible for DoD dental coverage.
  • Overseas employees are eligible for only an Aetna International Dental Plan, which is part of the Aetna International Traditional Choice® Indemnity Plan.
  • Retirees are eligible for only the Aetna Passive PPO Dental Plan.
Key points
  • Choosing a dentist: These plans give you the freedom to use any licensed dentist.
  • In-network dentists: In-network dentists generally charge less than out-of-network dentists since Aetna has negotiated rates with them. This means you pay less for your dental care. Network dental providers file claims for you. To find providers, log in to Aetna.com and go to Find Care and Pricing. If you aren’t yet an Aetna member, click here to find providers.
  • Out-of-network dentists: Charges for out-of-network dental care are based on the recognized charge for that service in your geographic area, which is higher than the negotiated fee. This means you’ll pay more. You may also need to file your own claims with Aetna to be reimbursed for covered expenses.
  • Preventive care: Preventive dental care is covered at 100% regardless of the licensed dentist you use. For more advanced care, the plan pays a portion of the cost, depending on the services you receive. Review your plan documents for more details.
Aetna Passive PPO Dental Plan

This plan is available to U.S. employees who enroll in an Aetna medical plan. It’s also available to those who enroll in an HMO medical plan that doesn’t include dental coverage.

Aetna Stand Alone Dental Plan

This plan is available to eligible employees who don’t enroll in a NAF medical plan and want dental coverage only. This plan isn’t available to retirees.
